Hair extensions can be intimidating to first timers, and even to seasoned wearers. You not only have more hair to deal with but this new hair's personality may be just a little different from your own hair. When new to hair extensions, every tip helps. Here are 3 you probably didn't know.
Trick #1

For some reason, hair extensions don't get oily while our own hair does (it's why we don't have to wash our hair as often with hair extensions in). When I need to refresh my hair but I don't feel like washing the whole thing, I will take the hair that sits on top and in front (hairline) of the extensions, clip it up on top of my head while I take the remaining hair and tie into a low pony tail to keep out of the way while I wash the top. I, then, take the clip out of the top hair, lean over a sink and wash, then condition the hair. I will blow dry the hair, let the ponytail loose, blow dry to join the two and there you are, a head of hair that looks and feels just washed with only one quarter of the work and one quarter of the time.
Trick #2
This trick was taught to me by a client and is one of my favorites. It is mostly good for wefts but can work for other types of extensions as well.
It doesn't happen often (thank god), but sometimes, a weft side can come loose. A thread can break or the hair can slip out causing the weft to comes lose or undone.
First thing you do is section off the problematic part of the weft or extension. Take a tiny ponytail of extension hair. By tiny, I mean about as much as you would grab with 2 fingers in your bangs (if you had any). Grab the same amount of your own hair about 1/4" in front of the weft. Tie the two together with a small elastic, split the hair and pull to tighten the rubber band.
That's it! This trick will hold up until you get back from vacation and can make it back to your hairdresser. I've seen it hold up for 2 weeks on one client

Trick #3
This next trick is more of a tip than a trick but it is such an important tip that you never hear about that it can be considered a trick.
Most of us girls that get hair extensions have fine or thin hair, therefore, we are used to using light conditioners that won't weigh our hair down. Those light conditioners are the opposite of what we should be using on our extensions. We need to use deep conditioners.
Using a deep conditioner on your hair extensions will make all the difference in how they behave and how easy or hard it will be to style them. Not only that, but it will prolong the life of your hair extensions. If you have fine hair just make sure to use the deep conditioner on the extensions only and continue to use your favorite conditioner on your own hair (usually the top of the hair). Try this tip out, you'll be amazed.
The only hair this tip is not recommended for is Russian hair, because of it's fine texture.
